Data Update: Expanded Name Matching in APAC Region

Here at Ekata, we strive to consistently improve our global data coverage and precision. Data is vital to the success of your business, and is especially important when verifying identities. At the core of every identity is a name. Matching names has proven to be a challenge, given that there is no global standard for naming convention. With that in mind, we’re excited to share with you that we’ve improved our name matching service for Indonesian and Malaysian persons.

Parsing and matching names can be a challenge for Indonesia and Malaysia, and in general by global means, for a number of reasons:

  1. Data can be inconsistent
  2. There are no international standards for names or formatting
  3. Global languages and customs add even more complexity

For Indonesia and Malaysia specifically, there are many types of conventions that can make name matching complex, such as:

  • Patronymic naming: a name derived from the name of a father or ancestor, typically by the addition of a prefix or suffix
  • Ethnicity-based titles: royal/noble titles, birth order, gender, and many more!

Now, customers will see a drastic improvement in name matching accuracy when Indonesian and Malaysian data is leveraged. This improvement consisted of updating our truth sets for Indonesian and Malaysian name data, while adding additional logic to our matching and parsing service. The improvements to this service will be reflected in all of our products, including Transaction Risk API and Account Opening API. That said, the API responses will not be changed, nor will there be any impact to the latency in our products.
